The following pirate party ideas will help you organize a super fun swashbuckling birthday party. With proper planning and a few good games, this could be the best party yet.
IDEAS FOR PIRATE GAMES & ACTIVITIES
Pirate Talk - To keep the theme alive, be sure everyone talks like a pirate. In fact, you could even make a game of it and see who can keep it up for the duration of the party.
In case your guests don't know very many pirate expressions, you could give them a list of pirate lingo to use. Better yet, create some decorative wall hangings with various pirate lingo written on them. This way you will be able to decorate your walls, while giving guests cheat sheets for their pirate talk.
Sword Fights - What pirate doesn't enjoy a good sword fight? With appropriate adult supervision, you can hold some sword fighting contests. Do it in rounds and require the buccaneers to do specific actions for each round. For example do their sword fighting right-handed, left-handed, while hopping on one foot, etc.
Swab The Deck - Draw the deck of a sizable pirate's ship on the cement. Then cover it with all sorts of debris. Things like crushed plastic bottles, pennies, torn paper, pirate confetti, etc. Then have each buccaneer take turns swabbing the deck with a broom while being timed. Whoever ends up with the best time shall be the winner. For added interest and especially if your pirates be a bit older, you could require they wear a blindfold while swabbing the deck or provide them with a broom that hardly has any bristles.
Treasure Hunt - Prior to the party, hide the birthday cake and have your buccaneers go on the hunt. For little ones, map out your clues so they have a visual hint. For older kids, write out clues for them to follow. You can break the kids into teams and have them work together or let them all individually compete against one another. A few of fun places to hide the cake is in a dryer, dishwasher, bathtub, or a dresser drawer.
Walk The Plank - Place a 5-feet board on some risers so it sits a few inches above the ground. Have your buccaneers line up and 1 by 1 blindfold them and have them walk the plank.
If a pirate is successful in walking the plank, they remain in the game. If the pirate falls off the board, they are out of the game. Have the pirates walk doing various things like walk toe to heel, blindfolded, backwards, hop on one foot, etc. in order to eliminate your players.
If your party is being held outside, you might consider adding some water games to the list. Think of classic games and give them a pirate twist.
Hot Cannonball - Fill some black balloons with water and let the buccaneers toss them around to one another. For added fun, give them all hook hands and play this game. Obviously, you will go through a lot of balloons and the kids are destined to get wet! Be sure to have plenty of cannonballs and towels on hand.
Cannonball Fight - Split your pirates into two teams and provide them each with a bunch of black cannonballs (water balloons). The team who successfully soaks the other team first will be the winning team. If someone suffers a hit, they be out of the game.
